If you have a situation where you need to refund your customer the money they have paid you, you want to make sure that you are doing it correctly so that everything clears out in the customer’s account and they show the correct balance due if they have one, or that their account balance is zero if they no longer owe you any money. Refunding a customer seems so simple, but many of my clients struggle with how to record the transactions in their bookkeeping system. Most will issue a check for the balance they want to refund, but the confusion normally comes when they need to record the refund in QuickBooks. You may be having the same issues if you are using another bookkeeping software system, but as long as you follow a few key steps, your refund will be recorded correctly. A common question I receive from clients is how they should be recording their loans in QuickBooks. I often see clients set up their loans the wrong way. They will sometimes appear on a report where they shouldn’t be, which can throw off any tax planning the client is trying to do. I know clients are trying their best and working hard to keep up with their bookkeeping, but every month when they record their loan payments, they know they are not doing it correctly, and it lowers their confidence when it comes to relying on their financial statements to make sound business decisions. One of the most popular questions I receive throughout the year, and especially during tax season, is which receipts do I need to keep for my business, and the follow-up for this question is typically how I should keep these receipts.
